Saying Sorry

What Does Apologizing Do For You?

I have talked with many people on this subject, and as expected, I received many different answers. It is true that some people only apologize due to a feeling of guilt, and wanting to make themselves feel better. A couple people answered that they never apologized, as they simply "didn't believe in the word 'sorry'". Some men and women answered that they would often apologize because they truly regretted whatever they had done and wanted to make things right with that other person (or group of people). I also got the answer that a person would apologize was because it was merely a habit. They expressed the fact that sometimes they did not even think about if what they did was wrong or not, they just seem to say 'sorry' out of instinct. "No feelings intended".

3 Different Ways to Say You're Sorry

[x] Send a gift. It can be anything, but it works better if it's somehow meaningful to the person receiving it. If you are in deep trouble, adding an extra gift can often be the magic touch that pushes your 'sorry' over the edge, and makes your mistakes look more attractive to being forgiven.

[x] Poetry. It is one of the most beautiful forms of expression through words, and if dedicated to a person out of true emotion, can really make your apologizing seem that much more sincere. A poem has long been considered one of the most thoughtful, symbolic, and romantic ways to communicate ones feelings.

[x] Using Music/Song Lyrics. It's true that songs can often mimic exactly what you may be feeling in real life. Often artists use their music as journals, thus creating similar experiences that we can understand. Using these songs as an example can often help get your point across, and come in handy if you didn't know how exactly to form your words. For example, Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" has some beautiful lyrics about promising to make things right again.

"After all that we've been through,
I will make it up to you. I promise to."

Overall, Apologizing is Good for the Soul

No matters what your reasons may be, there's no doubt that saying 'I'm sorry' (whether accepted or not) helps relieve a bit of pressure of our chests. My advice would be to make your apology mean something. Don't use empty words. Be creative, maybe even extravagant if possible. It's hardly ever bad to show a person how much you care about them. Even if it's hiring a pilot to write "Sorry" in the sky. For those of you who may find apologizing tough, just try it. Sometimes you just have to swallow your ego and bury your pride in the backyard. Whatever you do, do not be afraid to make the first move and apologize first (whether you were wrong or not). Often, we wait for each other to take responsibility and ask for forgiveness and in the process lose much of our precious moments that we could have spent together.

I loved that apology notice. I'd like to print that out and use on my husband if I ever get into trouble with him. He'd think it was great.

I agree that sometimes it's helpful to add a gift to your heartfelt apology, especially when you've done something you truly regret. I find myself apologizing often...to my kids, my husband, my friends. I'm definitely not perfect, and I have a bad habit of speaking before I've thought the words through.

Haha yes, I thought that was a great example.

I do the same kind of thing, and always end up apologizing...sometimes too much. I have yet to find a perfect equation for the best way to apologize.

Thanks for reading!

Very nice hub and tips. Some people would rather die than apologize. Your hub should help ease the pain.
